Rocky Intertidal and Kayaking at the Estuary

I was particularly excited to see the chitons and the sea cucumbers during today's rocky intertidal investigation. It was more difficult to navigate the rough terrain, but the communities of life are easier to come across and you have distinct zones to find these organisms. The sea cucumbers and chitons were found in the middle intertidal. I am guessing the salinity of the water in the lower zone, closer to the water, had a lower salinity than the pools found further away from the water.

The most exciting thing was getting stuck as we were going to the estuary to go kayaking. I think we took the wrong road, but we all worked together and it all worked out. The water is different in an estuary with low visibility, so not as much life to see in the water, but there were some birds flying around, so I am sure there were some. As we were kayaking, we passed an oyster farming area where there were families playing in the water nearby.
